Few months ago, I got watch the Singapore drama(小娘惹). Actually I found that I really can't get the idea more in depth of Baba Nyonya. And one of the astro program also got introduce their culture especially their wedding custom(But I just skip it...).After I went to the activity for research about Baba Nyonya, I just realized there are really a lot of background and culture I really never heard before.
When i walk in to the musuem, I got to attract their chinese style furniture. maybe is my personal preferences.
Most of their design are using flowers. And the intereting part is got animals(birds, bat, kirin, squirrel, fox and some animal that i can't discover out what is that. Some look like elephant)
I asked the presenter "why are so many plants and animal inside the furniture design...any meaning?"
Unfortunatelly, she answered dun know...maybe is follow the chinese culture(ok...nvm...）This photo is in one of the baba nyonya restaurant. It's already telling the starting point of baba nyonya.
Their furniture culture very mix...got chinese style, victorian style. I would like to focus on chinese part.
They using marble table...the good way is can lower down the hot temperature when people touch it and make it cool down. Because in the old generation...they are no "fan".
they believe in chinese culture very much. Like the staircase is using wood to connect together. There is no nail. Because they believe nail is just use in coffin. And quite like the function of the staircase. Because it got a door and cover to look. One is prevention for the thief another is lock it when husband came back lately(funny~)
And I also found that baba nyonya are believe in "Feng Shui" pretty much. They got a lot of step and culture about "Feng Shui". Nyonya need to marry before 20 years old. Or else, they will be consider "old".
Blue & white ceramic plates is only use for dead.(now already dun care anymore)...water represent money
The most funny research for me is their habit. They used bowl as their washbasin...and toilet bowl in midnight. This is easy way. But the funny thing is the master room got a small hole(can direct open up and watch down to the downstairs see who coming).If the guess is not invited. They directly use the toilet bowl to splash down to the into the small hole.
